Purchasing a home is a big accomplishment and an expensive step in life.  Deciding what home to buy is one of the biggest decisions one makes in life. There are many factors to consider when purchasing a home such as the monthly payments, the term of the loan, the amount of the down payment, the size of the house and the features of the home. Some of the features to consider are as follows:
A.               How many bedrooms do you want?
B.    What size of house (sq. feet)?
C.    What year is the house built?
D.   What type of landscaping or yard?
E.    Do you want a one or two story home?
F.     How many bathrooms?
G.   Do you want a fireplace?
H.   Do you want a garage? What size?(2 car etc.)
I.       What size lot do you want?
Task:
You will need to determine the following:
1.     The area to find your home. (Earlham, WDM, DM, Clive, etc.)
2.     What features do you want in the home? (see above introduction for ideas)
3.     What are the monthly payments?
4.     Research and select 2 homes you would like to purchase. One of the homes should be a practical choice and the other can be a "reasonable dream" home.
5.     Find the current interest rate on home loans and determine the monthly cost for the homes you choose.
6.     Find the cost for mortgage insurance.
7.     Calculate the monthly payments including taxes, mortgage insurance, and interest.  
8.     Determine the total cost of purchasing the home at the end of the mortgage term. (amount of interest)
 
Process:
You will determine the location, features, and price of the home and explain your choices.
You will then search for a house meeting the above criteria using the websites listed below.  Be sure to note the website where you found your house in your presentations.
You will choose 2 homes from the houses obtained in your search that you would like to purchase. Use the Home Buying Record Sheet that is in the google docs template gallery. Go to Google Docs and save yourself a copy of this file..
You need to research mortgage options for home buying.  You have two options, making a down payment of 20% or 5% payment.  You are to find the interest rate associated with each down payment option and calculate the mortgage payments for each.  You will need to consider 2 types of loans for each home.  Record all your findings.  For a 5% downpayment you will have to pay  PMI insurance, until you have paid off 20% of your homes value.  The cost per month is .78% of mortgage amount.
 
Based upon the monthly payment above (including taxes and insurance), You must determine if the the price would be reasonable for your anticipated future income.
You must determine total cost of purchasing the home chosen (Determine the interest paid during the loan).
You are to compile the closing costs for your home purchases.  Use the Closing Cost Record Sheet that is in the google docs template gallery. Go to Google Docs and save yourself a copy of this file..
You  will do a PowerPoint presentation based upon their results, including why you chose the houses that you did. Be sure to give a complete description of the costs involved with each home purchase.  Include a list of websites used for the presentation.
Resources:
1.     SD Realty or RE-MAX are good places to find your homes.  They also have some other support services for  home buyers.
2.     Bankrate  Mortgage Calculator  has a  calculator for monthly payments of mortgages.  You will have to find the rates needed for the loans first.
3.     Money  is a good place to get a rate comparison for area banks. The rates are needed for  the calculation of the monthly payment.

Conclusion:
During the Buying a Home web quest you were using critical thinking skills such as: analysis, comparison, and evaluation. This involved research and the use of problem solving skills. Upon the completion of this web quest you should have a much clearer understanding of what is necessary in order to purchase a home and understand the costs involved and should have sharpened your critical thinking, research, and problem solving skills.

What is a wiki library?

Wikiwiki means quick in Hawaiian. A wiki library is a document library in which users can easily edit any page. The library grows organically by linking existing pages together or by creating links to new pages. If a user finds a link to an uncreated page, he or she can follow the link and create the page.

In business environments, a wiki library provides a low-maintenance way to record knowledge. Information that is usually traded in e-mail messages, gleaned from hallway conversations, or written on paper can instead be recorded in a wiki library, in context with similar knowledge.

Other example uses of wiki libraries include brainstorming ideas, collaborating on designs, creating an instruction guide, gathering data from the field, tracking call center knowledge, and building an encyclopedia of knowledge.

How to use this wiki library
You can use this wiki library to share knowledge, brainstorm ideas, collaborate with your team on a design, create an instruction guide, build an encyclopedia of knowledge, or just write down daily information in an easily accessible and modifiable format.

Editing pages
To edit this page, click on the Edit Page icon at the top of the page. To see all available commands, click on the Page tab. When you are editing, you can type text onto the page or insert tables and pictures. To stop editing, click the Save button at the top of the page. If you leave the page while editing, you will be prompted to save your changes.

Creating wiki links
You can link to another page in this wiki library by enclosing the name of the page in double brackets. When you type [[, the wiki will suggest page names that start with what you've typed. You can select one of these pages using the arrow keys or the mouse, or you can type in a new name. If you type in a new name, it will make a link to a page which has not yet been created. Links are finished by typing ]]. If you are linking to a page in a subfolder or an item in another list, you can press tab to add the selected suggested item to your link without closing the link.

You can link to many objects in SharePoint, not just pages. Here are some examples of links:
[[Dogs]] : A link to a page named Dogs in the same folder.
[[Animals/Dogs]] : A link to a page named Dogs in a subfolder called Animals.
[[List:Announcements/Welcome]] : A link to the item called Welcome in the Announcements list on this site.

To create a link to a page and have the link display different text than the page name, type a pipe character (|) after the page name, and then type the display text. For example, type [[Home|Home Page]] to create the link labeled Home Page that points to the page named Home.

To display double opening or closing brackets without making a link, type a backslash before the two brackets. For example, \[[ or \]].

Creating pages
There are two main ways to create a new page in your wiki library:
  1. Create a link to a page which does not exist and then click on it to create the page:
    This is the recommended way to create a page because it is easier for people to find the page when another page links to it. Links to pages that do not yet exist have a dashed underline.

  2. Create a page that is not linked to any other:
    In the Site Actions menu, click New Page. This will ask you for a name and then create that page in the current wiki library.

Managing your wiki library
You can manage the pages in your wiki library by clicking View All Pages on the Page tab of any page in the library.

Restoring a page
If you need to restore a previous version of a page, click Previous Versions in the Page tab at the top of the page. You can then click on any of the versions in the quick launch to view the page as it existed at that time. If you want to restore to a version, select it and click Restore this version in the toolbar.

Viewing incoming links
You can see which pages link to the current page by clicking Incoming Links at the top of the page. This will show you any pages which link to this page.
